Promega UK and the Science Based Targets Initiative (SBTi)

A Science-Led Framework for Emission Reduction in Life Sciences

Climate Accountability in the Biotechnology Sector

In July 2025, Promega Corporation officially committed to the Science Based Targets initiative (SBTi), a globally respected framework that helps businesses reduce greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions in line with climate science.

As part of this, we’re undertaking a 24-month, cross-functional process to set and validate science-based targets. This work brings together our corporate sustainability, manufacturing, engineering, and facilities teams, including input from our UK operations.

“We’ve taken a careful approach to ensure our targets are supported by a clear path to achievement,” says Corey Meek, Promega Corporate Responsibility Programme Manager. “We approach this effort with the same long-view perspective that informs our decision-making and direction across the organisation.”

By aligning with SBTi, Promega is ensuring that carbon reduction goals are not only ambitious, but also measurable, transparent, and grounded in science, with clear action behind the ambition.

Sustainability in Practice at Promega UK

Our UK site in Southampton has a long-standing commitment to reducing environmental impact while also supporting staff wellbeing, biodiversity, and ethical operations. These are not future plans — they are actions already in place.

Environmental Standards: ISO 14001 Certification

Promega UK holds ISO 14001 certification, the internationally recognised standard for environmental management systems. This framework helps guide how we:

  • Track emissions and waste
  • Identify and manage environmental risks
  • Integrate environmental considerations into everyday decision-making.

This certification gives customers confidence in our environmental practices — not just as aspirations, but as externally verified standards.

Renewable Energy in Life Sciences: 100% REGO-Backed Electricity

All electricity used at our UK facility is backed by Renewable Energy Guarantees of Origin (REGO). This provides traceability and accountability, supporting Promega UK’s Scope 2 emissions reduction strategy.

It also aligns with customer expectations, particularly those operating under public or academic procurement frameworks where REGO-backed electricity is often a key criterion.

Green Infrastructure and Biodiversity Investments

At our Southampton site, sustainability is built into the physical space. Our infrastructure and design features include:

  • Solar panels generating clean energy
  • Ground source heat pump for efficient low-carbon heating
  • Electric vehicle charging points
  • Shutter-back doors to reduce heat loss
  • Living roof and biodiversity zones, including on-site beehives.

These installations are tangible evidence of a sustainabiliy plan that goes beyond words — delivering visible, measurable impact.

Independent Assessment: Ecovadis Sustainability Scoring

Promega UK participates in EcoVadis, a leading third-party platform used to evaluate the environmental and ethical performance of suppliers.

We share our scores transparently with customers, including in tender applications and audits, to help procurement teams meet their own sustainability targets and reporting obligations.

Ethical Procurement and Employee Wellbeing in UK Life Sciences

Our sustainability values extend beyond the environment. We focus equally on:

  • Employee wellbeing, supported by dedicated spaces including a wellness room, outdoor gym garden, and green breakout areas
  • Ethical supply chain partnerships, maintained through a Supplier Code of Conduct that mirrors the high standards we apply internally.

This people-centred approach reflects Promega UK’s broader view of sustainability — one that values social as well as environmental integrity.

Supporting Public Sector and Academic Procurement

Promega UK’s environmental data, ISO certification, REGO-backed electricity, and EcoVadis scoring align with the requirements of many academic and NHS procurement frameworks.

We actively support customers in:

  • Meeting sustainability criteria in tenders
  • Responding to ESG-related supplier questionnaires
  • Demonstrating Scope 2 carbon reductions via verified sources.

We welcome conversations with procurement teams looking to integrate more sustainable suppliers into their frameworks.

Looking Ahead: What’s Next for Sustainability at Promega UK?

Sustainability is an ongoing journey. Over the coming months, we will be:

  • Developing and submitting our science-based targets under the SBTi framework
  • Continuing to reduce Scope 1 and 2 emissions at our UK site
  • Enhancing access to clear, auditable data for procurement teams and partners
  • Investing further in biodiversity spaces and employee wellbeing infrastructure.

This page will be updated as our science-based targets are finalised and new initiatives are implemented.
