Route 2045: Driving Promega UK’s
Journey to Net Zero

Five Vehicles – One Destination

It can be daunting to set out when you know the destination but not the route, but when aiming for carbon neutrality, that's what most organisations will have to do. Promega UK has embarked on its own carbon reduction journey — Route 2045. This is our roadmap, designed around local operations, logistics, and partnerships.

Our first major checkpoint is 2030, when we’ll reach net zero for our direct operations (Scope 1 and 2) and our convoy continues toward our final destination: full Scope 3 neutrality by 2045.

To get there, Promega UK is moving forward together, with five major initiatives, each representing a vehicle on our sustainability journey. We call them our five vehicles on Route 2045.

1. The Lorry – Reducing Dry Ice Use

Dry ice is essential to Promega’s operations, required to keep our temperature-sensitive products in perfect condition during shipment to our customers. But it also carries a carbon cost: every kilogram that sublimates releases CO₂ into the atmosphere, and its production and distribution add further emissions upstream.

Our goal is to reduce dry ice intensity by 15 percent per £ million revenue by 2030. We’re exploring alternative packaging designs, optimising dry ice formats and testing -80 °C gel packs as potential replacements in selected shipments. We’re benchmarking our current use and learning from our colleagues in the United States to identify the most effective solutions.

2. The Hatchback – Electrifying the Journey

We’re transitioning 95 percent of our fleet to electric vehicles, supported by a formal EV adoption policy to help employees make the switch. Wherever possible, they’ll be charged on-site using renewable electricity. For public charging, where the grid mix cannot be controlled, we’ll offset associated emissions through verified carbon credits.

3. The Chiller – Partnering with Suppliers on Neutral Dry Ice

We’re collaborating with our dry ice suppliers to identify carbonneutral production options. This includes sourcing from manufacturers using renewablepowered CO capture and liquefaction processes, and optimising delivery routes to minimise transportation emissions.

This partnership model will act as a blueprint for wider Scope 3 reductions across our supply chain.

4. The Transit Van – Reducing Emissions Across the Supply Chain

Beyond dry ice, Promega UK is examining its broader supplychain footprint. From packaging materials to freight logistics, were identifying hotspots and working collaboratively with partners to lower embedded emissions. This strand of Route 2045 links directly to Promega Corporations global sustainability framework, ensuring that UK progress contributes to and benefits from shared learning worldwide.

5. The Road Sweeper – Offsetting the Final Miles

Even with best efforts, a small number of emissions will remain — such as those generated when charging electric vehicles using thirdparty grid power. These will be neutralised through targeted carbon offsets, verified for quality and impact. It’s a modest but necessary part of the convoy: the Road Sweeper clears what’s left behind, ensuring residual emissions don’t cloud our progress.

From Measurement to Movement

Promega UK’s carbonreduction journey began with measurement understanding our footprint in detail through reliable data and transparent reporting. Route 2045 turns that knowledge into motion.

This framework captures what we believe sustainability should look like: datadriven, structured and sustained. The work doesnt rest on a single initiative but on continual improvement. Every mile matters and every action brings us closer to our destination - net zero. We know the route will continue to evolve, but we’re firmly on the road.
