Promega UK Community Project | Sea Scouts
Fostering Biodiversity and Community Engagement | August 2023
In 2023, Promega UK had the opportunity to work with a local youth group, Bishopstoke Sea Scouts, who were looking for ways to engage their young people in biodiversity and the outside environment.
Children, spanning various age groups, utilised unwanted or discarded materials to create 'bug hotels'. The project aimed to raise awareness of declining insect populations and provide education to the Scouts children on how habitats can play an important part in supporting biodiversity.
With Promega UK HQ being surrounded by gardens, home to perennial flowers and a wildflower meadow, where beetles, bees and butterflies frequent, it was the perfect location for the the group to place their 'Bug Hotels'.
"We were absolutely thrilled to host and to support Bishopstoke Sea Scouts efforts."

Emma Kane, Sea Scout Volunteer and Promega UK Marketing Assistant commented:
"The Bishopstoke Sea Scouts dedicated a full term to focus on the environment around them, taking part in local community projects aimed at making a positive impact on their surroundings. Being able to work with local businesses has unlocked excellent opportunities to our young people. Promega UK supplied us with beautiful gardens to place the 'Bug Hotels' and Stewarts Landscaping provided us with the resources we needed. The different age groups within our group have enjoyed various projects, from creating the hotels from unwanted materials, making and planting pots and observing plant growth."
With the bug hotels planted in Promega UK's garden, both Promega and the Scouts are eager to witness bugs and insects inhabiting their shelters over the next six to twelve months. The structures will mature over several years and become not only a rich habitat, but a visible reminder of the importance of insect life.
We look forward to welcoming the Sea Scouts for visits to observe the thriving insect life. Thank you Bishopstoke Sea Scouts!
If you would like to try your own bug hotel the Sea Scouts used Snug as a bug – Activities - Scouts for inspiration!
