Promega UK | Silver Sustainability Rating
Silver - and a higher score than last year.
Promega UK has been awarded a Silver EcoVadis rating in our latest assessment, placing us within the 92nd percentile (top 8%)of more than 150,000 companies rated worldwide by EcoVadis, the globally recognised provider of business sustainability ratings.
Our overall score improved on our previous submission to 77/100, with a standout Environment score of 91/100 - achieving maximum marks for environmental policies, measures and certifications. EcoVadis applies its medal thresholds on a rolling basis against the wider population of rated companies. As standards across that population rise, the bar for each medal rises with it. A higher score against a higher benchmark is a result we're genuinely pleased with.
Rick Lowery, Head of Bids, Contracts and Commercial Compliance for Promega UK, who led the submission, said:
"Our score is up year on year across the four pillars EcoVadis assesses - environment, labour and human rights, ethics, and sustainable procurement. The medal thresholds have moved, but the direction of travel for Promega UK hasn't. We're improving, and we intend to keep improving."
Since our previous EcoVadis assessment we have:
- Achieved ISO 14001 recertification for our Environmental Management System.
- Continued to operate on a REGO-certified 100% renewable electricity tariff, supported by on-site solar generation and reversible ground source heat pumps for heating and cooling
- Globally committed to setting Science Based Targets through the SBTi to reduce greenhouse gas emissions in line with climate science
- Expanded employee-led sustainability activity through our in-house Sustainability Group and paid volunteering scheme.
"Silver reflects real progress on a tougher scale. The team has kept raising the standard of what we do, and this result tells us the work is landing."
Derek McCall, MD, Promega UK
In our journey towards sustainability, we have integrated key environmental initiatives into our core operations and policies and employees are a vital part of this.
Our in-house Sustainability Group engages employees with our environmental objectives, leveraging their creativity to help find new, lower impact solutions to solve old problems.
Stephen Orr, Chair of the Employee Sustainability Group said:
“It has been pleasing to see ideas from the group being taken up and converted into objectives, but seeing some of those suggestions adopted straight away has been very gratifying.”
Our employee volunteering scheme allows employees to take paid time each year, to help charitable and community causes. Dan Bateman, who along with some of his departmental colleagues volunteered to do garden maintenance at Heartbeat House.
“We recently volunteered at Heartbeat House, putting in new plants, tidying the garden area up and jet washing the patio. The House provides valuable support and facilities for patients and families suffering from heart conditions, often from those with sudden cardiac conditions and the residents can be far from home. We hope by sprucing up the garden ready for the summer it can provide a small bit of peace for those in need.”.
Workplace charging for electric vehicles and bikes has been introduced to increase the access to sustainable transport options.
“The covered charging facilities provided for electric bikes has really enhanced the practicality of electric transport for me and has encouraged me to come by bike more often. This is really helpful in supporting a healthier, eco-friendly commute.” - Liam Doherty, Senior Logistics Operative
In addition, we've made a number of investments to reduce Promega UK's footprint, contributing to the 23% reduction of electricity consumption across the corporation as a whole (indexed to revenue):
- LED lighting throughout the UK facility
- Solar Pannel array
- Ground Source Heating and colling
- REGO certified 100% renewable source electricity link.
We have also become ISO 14001 certified (Environmental Management Systems) a process which ensures we continually monitor and reduce our environmental impacts.
Our commitment to sustainability extends beyond environmental actions and reducing our carbon footprint. We are committed to enhancing our social value, while actively supporting community engagement through various philanthropic initiatives. These efforts are integral to our mission of not just conducting business responsibly but also contributing positively to society. https://www.promega.co.uk/corporate-responsibility-csr/communities/
